Every story is a love story (Cristi Puiu said on one of our class). It makes sense. It's not just a catchy, romantic phrase. If you are in good terms with the script-writing basics, you start to make connections with the path of your characters.
For those who first thought about romance between two characters, I'll remind them that a character can love the career (like in 1,2,3 -Billy Wilder), the freedom (Thelma and Louise), money or honour (in Alien "Ripley is married to the regulations" as mr Radu Nicoara said).
And yes, a character that goes trough some shit, will do that because he cares a lot about something. If he's not going trough some really deep shit, he's not a movie character, and especially not a hero.
